Arsenal legend Paul Merson has repeatedly urged the Gunners to “break the bank” for Newcastle United’s Alexander Isak, labeling the Swedish striker as the “missing link” to elevate Mikel Arteta’s side to Premier League glory.

Speaking on Sky Sports News (January 2, 2025), Merson emphasized that Isak’s £150 million price tag would be worth it, stating, “He’s the best of the best and takes Arsenal to another level.” His comments, echoed across multiple platforms, highlight Isak’s potential to transform Arsenal’s attack.

Isak, 25, has been in scintillating form, scoring 19 goals and providing five assists in all competitions this season. His dynamic movement and clinical finishing, showcased in Newcastle’s 2-0 Carabao Cup semi-final win over Arsenal, left William Saliba struggling.

Paul Merson praised Isak’s “unassuming” yet explosive style, declaring, “He can only go to Arsenal in the whole world really,” dismissing moves to rivals like Manchester City or Tottenham.

“Newcastle could be playing Champions League football next season and have already tasted silverware. Let’s not forget that they are a big club and if they qualify for the Champions League, they are an attractive project to be a part of for any player.

“I think Isak surely wants to be involved in the Champions League next season and that could play a key role here.

“Arsenal seem like the best possible move for him if he leaves Newcastle though. If the Gunners get him, they will win the league by 10 points!”

Arsenal’s need for a prolific No. 9 is evident, with Gabriel Jesus sidelined by injury and Kai Havertz managing seven goals in 17 matches. Paul Merson argued Isak surpasses Jesus, noting, “He’s on a different level.”

Isak’s ability to “come short, get in the box, and spread the game” could unlock space for Martin Odegaard and Bukayo Saka, addressing Arsenal’s congested attack.

However, Newcastle’s £150 million valuation and Isak’s happiness at St. James’ Park, where he called playing a “dream”, pose challenges.
