Nigel Winterburn says one Arsenal player deserves more praise than criticism this season

Ex-Arsenal defender Nigel Winterburn has taken to the side of Arsenal captain Martin Odegaard amid a series of fan and media criticisms recently. Martin Odegaard has faced scrutiny this season due to a perceived dip in form.

However, former Arsenal defender Nigel Winterburn has come to Odegaard’s defense, stating that the Norway international is “more important than people realize” and should be given more praise than criticism.

Despite Odegaard’s impressive track record, his numbers this season have been less spectacular.

He has scored five goals and provided 10 assists in all competitions, leading some to question his impact on the team’s midfield. Nevertheless, Winterburn believes that Odegaard’s value to the team extends beyond his on-field production.

“Captains lead in different ways,” Winterburn explained in an interview with BetVictor. “When a captain’s form drops off, as Martin Odegaard’s has, taking the armband off them is a conversation that’s always going to come up.” Winterburn emphasized that Odegaard’s work rate and desire to possess the ball demonstrate his commitment to the team.

For Winterburn, a captain’s role encompasses more than just their performance on the pitch. “I think he’s more important than people realize, as a link between the manager and the squad both on the pitch and off it,” he said.

The question of Odegaard’s captaincy has sparked debate among fans and pundits. While there has been no indication that Odegaard will lose the armband, Mikel Arteta may consider alternatives.

Potential candidates include defenders Gabriel and William Saliba, who have emerged as leaders in Arsenal’s defense.

However, Winterburn believes that Declan Rice would be an ideal candidate to succeed Odegaard as captain. Rice has been Arsenal’s standout performer this season, bringing energy and vocal leadership to the midfield.

“I do understand why people are talking about Rice potentially getting the captaincy, because of his energy and the fact he has become a more vocal presence on the pitch, especially in the second half of the season,” Winterburn noted.
