Mikel Arteta urges Andrea to sign another Chelsea flop this summer

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has reportedly urged the club to join the growing race to sign Chelsea forward Christopher Nkunku, as the Frenchman looks to revive his career away from Stamford Bridge.

Nkunku arrived at Chelsea in the summer of 2023 in a £52 million move from RB Leipzig amid high expectations, but injuries and inconsistent form have derailed his debut season in the Premier League. The 27-year-old made just 14 league appearances and scored only three goals, leading Chelsea to consider offloading him as early as the January window.

Despite his struggles, Nkunku’s pedigree remains appealing to several top clubs. The France international was named Bundesliga Player of the Season in 2021–22 and finished as the league’s top scorer the following year. According to The Sun, six clubs are now vying for his signature, with Arsenal among the frontrunners.

Arteta is reportedly keen to bolster his attacking options and believes Nkunku could rediscover his best form in north London. The Spaniard has previously overseen the resurgence of another former Chelsea player, Kai Havertz, who has become a key figure at the Emirates since his switch in 2023. However, Arsenal’s move for Raheem Sterling last summer failed to deliver the desired impact, leaving the Gunners in search of more consistent firepower.

Arsenal are not alone in their pursuit. Manchester United, who held talks with Chelsea over Nkunku in January, remain interested, with new boss Ruben Amorim said to be a major admirer. Liverpool are also monitoring the situation closely, as new manager Arne Slot eyes reinforcements following the club’s recent Premier League title win.

Former Chelsea boss Graham Potter, now at West Ham, is reportedly considering a move for Nkunku as part of his first major transfer window in charge of the Hammers. Meanwhile, Paris Saint-Germain and Atletico Madrid are also exploring potential deals, offering the forward a chance to continue his career outside England.

Nkunku is open to a summer move in a bid to reignite his faltering trajectory, and earlier this month, ex-Chelsea winger Florent Malouda publicly backed a transfer to Arsenal, calling it a “good move” for the struggling attacker.
