Mikel Arteta mocks Man Utd and Tottenham in brutal remarks

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta could not resist a thinly veiled jab at rivals Manchester United and Tottenham after his side confirmed a second-place Premier League finish with a 1-0 win over Newcastle on Sunday.

While reflecting on another trophyless campaign, Arteta pointedly noted how some “big clubs” have struggled so badly this season that they find themselves languishing in 16th and 17th—positions currently occupied by Manchester United and Spurs with just one game remaining.

The Gunners’ victory at the Emirates, sealed by Declan Rice’s second-half strike, ensured they will finish as runners-up for a third consecutive season. Despite an impressive Champions League semifinal run and another strong league campaign, there remains a lingering frustration at falling short of silverware once again.

“Any other team, and I’ve seen it, with one injury to finish eighth to 16th, 17th,” he told Sky Sports. “What this team has done to sustain the level, with everything that’s happened, is incredible.”

Though Arteta didn’t name Manchester United or Tottenham directly, his reference to their lowly league positions, just above the relegation zone was hardly coincidental. The Spaniard’s comments highlight the gulf between Arsenal’s stability and the chaos at other traditional top-six sides.

“We have to start creating our own history here,” he added. “There’s much more to come, and it won’t be easy. But any other club in our position would finish in a place we can’t even dream of.”

The message is clear: next season must end the club’s wait for a Premier League or Champions League triumph.
