Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has reportedly entered direct talks with Nico Williams in an effort to convince the highly-rated winger to snub interest from Real Madrid and join the Gunners instead.
Williams, who is emerging as one of the most sought-after wingers in world football, has attracted strong interest from top European clubs, including Arsenal, Real Madrid, Chelsea, and Barcelona. However, according to CaughtOffside, Arsenal are now in a “commanding position” after Arteta personally presented his long-term vision to the 22-year-old Spain international.

The Athletic Club star has a release clause of £50 million in his contract, making him a realistic target for elite clubs this summer. Williams has enjoyed an outstanding season, registering 11 goals and seven assists in 44 appearances across all competitions. He played a key role in Athletic’s Copa del Rey triumph in 2023/24 and lifted the UEFA European Championship with Spain the same year.

While Real Madrid remain in the race to secure his services, Arteta’s proactive approach could prove pivotal in swaying the winger’s decision. Arsenal are keen to bolster their attack ahead of the 2025/26 season and view Williams as a major upgrade on their current wide options.

Barcelona, another club credited with interest in Williams, may have already ruled themselves out of the running. Sporting director Deco hinted at lingering frustration over the player’s decision to turn them down last summer.
“He’s a great player. We’ve seen his potential,” Deco told RAC-1. “This year, he has been more inconsistent, but he’s at the level. Last season, there were two players who could have improved the team: Nico and [Dani] Olmo. Dani showed from the very beginning that he wanted to come. Nico didn’t. It dragged on, and it couldn’t be done.”
With Arsenal offering Williams a clear role in their exciting project and Madrid’s interest heating up, the decision now rests with the young star, who is expected to make a choice before the summer transfer window enters full swing.
