Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta has expressed his desire for Thomas Partey to remain at the club, describing the Ghanaian midfielder as a key figure in his squad. Talks are already underway between the club and Partey’s representatives over a new contract, as Arsenal prepare for a reshuffle in midfield this summer.
Partey, 31, has enjoyed a standout campaign, making 51 appearances across all competitions after an injury-hit season last year that limited him to just 16 outings. His consistent performances and versatility—covering both central midfield and right-back—have earned him praise from Arteta, who labelled this season as his “most consistent” to date.
“Yes,” Arteta said when asked if he wants Partey to stay. “Consistency-wise, it’s been his best season. The way he’s played, performed, his availability—he’s been exceptional. He’s a really important player for us.”

According to journalist Charles Watts, negotiations have intensified this week, with Partey’s agent attending Arsenal’s 1-0 win over Newcastle United on Sunday. Both parties are said to be eager to reach an agreement quickly. Arsenal are reportedly prepared to offer a one-year extension with an option for a further year, while Partey is believed to be seeking either a two-year deal or a one-plus-one structure with improved terms.

Partey’s current contract, signed in 2020 upon his arrival from Atlético Madrid, expires next summer. He has attracted interest from Saudi Pro League clubs offering lucrative financial packages, but sources suggest the midfielder prefers to continue at Arsenal, provided a suitable compromise on salary and duration is reached.

Meanwhile, Arsenal are planning changes in midfield ahead of the 2025/26 season. Jorginho is set to leave the club as a free agent and join Brazilian side Flamengo. The Gunners remain confident of completing the signing of Martín Zubimendi from Real Sociedad, despite late interest from Real Madrid.
Arteta, who has lifted only the FA Cup since taking charge in 2019, acknowledged the need for more “firepower” in his squad as Arsenal aim to convert their recent Premier League near-misses into silverware.
