Manchester United have reportedly entered the race to sign highly-rated Espanyol goalkeeper Joan Garcia, joining Premier League rivals Arsenal in pursuit of the Spanish star, according to COPE.

Arsenal had expressed interest in Garcia last summer and have continued to monitor his progress, with the 23-year-old enjoying a breakout campaign in La Liga this season. The Gunners are seeking additional depth in the goalkeeping department, particularly with current back-up Neto set to return to Bournemouth once his loan deal expires.

Newly appointed sporting director Andrea Berta is said to be playing a key role in Arsenal’s transfer strategy and is expected to make the final call on whether to push forward with a move for Garcia. However, Arsenal are yet to reach an agreement with Espanyol over a transfer fee.

Espanyol’s league position could play a pivotal role in Garcia’s price tag. The Catalan club currently sit just seven points above the relegation zone. Should they be relegated, Garcia’s asking price could drop to around £13 million. However, if they retain their La Liga status, Arsenal and other suitors may have to pay closer to £22 million, prompting potential negotiations for a middle ground.

Despite interest from top Spanish sides including Atletico Madrid and Barcelona, as well as Bundesliga champions Bayer Leverkusen, Garcia is reportedly open to a move to the Premier League, with Arsenal seen as an appealing destination due to the opportunity to compete alongside fellow Spaniard David Raya.

Manchester United have now added their name to the list of suitors and have reportedly made contact with Garcia’s representatives. The Red Devils are in the market for a new goalkeeper following a turbulent season for Andre Onana, and with back-up Altay Bayindir entering the final year of his contract, a new signing could be on the cards.

United’s approach could complicate Arsenal’s plans, especially if Garcia prioritises an immediate path to first-team football. While Arsenal see him as a strong back-up to Raya, United could potentially offer a clearer route to the No.1 jersey at Old Trafford.
