Arsenal get major transfer boost as club ready to accept bid for star player

Arsenal have been handed a significant early boost in the summer transfer window, with reports in Portugal claiming Sporting Lisbon are ready to accept the Gunners’ €70 million (£60m) offer for striker Viktor Gyökeres.

According to Diário de Notícias, Sporting president Frederico Varandas is prepared to green-light the deal without prolonging negotiations, paving the way for Gyökeres to complete a move to the Premier League. The Swedish forward is expected to sign a long-term contract at the Emirates Stadium, reportedly earning just over €8 million per year.

Sporting had acquired Gyökeres from Coventry City for around €20 million in July 2023, and his impact has been nothing short of transformative. The 26-year-old has netted 53 goals in 51 appearances this season, playing a pivotal role in helping the Portuguese giants secure back-to-back Primeira Liga titles.

Arsenal, led by new sporting director Andrea Berta, are working quickly to secure priority targets after also receiving the green light to pursue Martin Zubimendi from Real Sociedad. Manager Mikel Arteta has reportedly approved the move for Gyökeres, having tracked the player since his days in the Championship.

Sporting are said to have planned ahead for Gyökeres’ departure, with reinvestment strategies already underway. The striker is expected to make his final appearance for the club on May 25 in the Taça de Portugal final against Benfica — a fixture that could see Sporting complete a domestic double for the first time since 2002.

Gyökeres had been given assurances last summer by Sporting’s leadership that he would be allowed to leave in 2025 if he remained committed for a second season. That promise is now being fulfilled, with the striker’s imminent departure to Arsenal marking the end of a successful chapter at Estádio José Alvalade.

While his official release clause stood at €100 million, a lower fee was reportedly pre-agreed last summer, and Arsenal’s €70 million offer has met the club’s expectations.
