Atletico Madrid forward Julian Alvarez has suggested he may remain in Spain this summer despite growing interest from Arsenal and Liverpool, who are both eager to strengthen their attacking options ahead of the new season.

The Argentine striker has enjoyed a stunning debut campaign under Diego Simeone, scoring 29 goals in all competitions and quickly establishing himself as the focal point of Atletico’s attack. His form has attracted attention across Europe, with Marca reporting that both Arsenal and Liverpool have expressed interest in the 25-year-old World Cup winner.

Arsenal are believed to be leading the race, with Mikel Arteta determined to sign a clinical No. 9. Liverpool’s level of pursuit could intensify if Darwin Núñez is sold, which would free up funds for a big-name replacement.

Despite the interest from England, Alvarez—who left Manchester City in an £80 million move just a year ago—is reportedly reluctant to return to the Premier League so soon. The Argentine has adapted quickly to life in Madrid and is said to be enjoying both the club’s environment and its passionate supporters.

In a recent post on social media, Alvarez thanked the Atletico faithful, writing: “The first season at home is coming to an end. Thank you for always being there and for making me feel like I belong from day one.” The message has been interpreted by many as a sign of his intent to stay at the club.

Adding to the uncertainty surrounding a possible transfer, Atletico president Enrique Cerezo firmly dismissed speculation of a sale. “Julian Alvarez is a player of Atletico de Madrid. He’s very happy here, he is our player and he will remain our player. He was raised at Atletico Madrid and he will die at Atletico Madrid,” Cerezo said.

Alvarez’s current contract runs until 2029, and Atletico are under no pressure to sell. Unless a club meets a hefty valuation—potentially exceeding £100 million—a departure this summer seems unlikely.

Barcelona have also been linked with a potential move for the forward as they search for a long-term successor to Robert Lewandowski. However, the Catalan side would likely face financial obstacles in any attempt to lure Alvarez away from a direct La Liga rival.

Arsenal’s transfer strategy may now hinge on their pursuit of Sporting CP striker Viktor Gyökeres, while Liverpool could explore other forward options if Alvarez remains committed to Atletico.

For now, Alvarez appears settled in Madrid—leaving the Premier League giants facing an uphill battle to convince him to make a swift return to English football.
