Mariona Caldentey claims hat-trick of awards after stellar debut season with Arsenal

Arsenal midfielder Mariona Caldentey has been honoured with a trio of individual accolades following a remarkable first season in English football.

The Spanish international was named the 2024–25 Women’s Super League Player of the Season, Arsenal Women Supporters Club Player of the Season, and the Mastercard Arsenal.com Player of the Season — a clean sweep of major awards recognising her outstanding contribution since joining from Barcelona last summer.

Caldentey’s debut WSL campaign has been nothing short of extraordinary. She played more minutes than any other Arsenal player (2,497), finished as the team’s second-highest goalscorer with 15 goals, and matched Katie McCabe for the most assists (7). Her 22 total goal contributions put her level with fellow forward Alessia Russo.

Beyond the raw numbers, Caldentey has been a driving force in midfield. She recorded the highest number of progressive passes and shot-creating actions in the squad, led in tackles and tackles won, and ranked second only to Leah Williamson in completed passes. She also topped the charts for passes into the penalty area and was among the league’s most effective players in terms of key passes and final-third distribution.

Her Player of the Season titles from the Arsenal Women Supporters Club and Mastercard Arsenal.com were voted for by fans, further cementing her popularity and impact.

Caldentey was also crowned the inaugural WSL Player of the Season at the Women’s Professional Game Awards on Sunday, beating a shortlist that included teammate Alessia Russo and Chelsea duo Aggie Beever-Jones and Sandy Baltimore.

“I’m super happy because I really enjoyed my first season here,” said Caldentey. “Everyone helped me. It was kind of easy to move from Barcelona. It’s a highly competitive league, but I have enjoyed it.”

While Russo narrowly missed out on the WSL award, the England international collected the 2024–25 FWA Women’s Footballer of the Year and shared the WSL Golden Boot with Manchester City’s Khadija Shaw, with both players scoring 12 goals.

Caldentey also finished third in voting for the Football Writers’ WSL Player of the Season and remains in contention for the Barclays WSL Player of the Season.

With a Champions League final against former club Barcelona on the horizon, Caldentey’s debut campaign could yet end with European silverware — the perfect capstone to a season already rich in personal accolades.
