Chloe Kelly reveals she was in a “dark place” before career-reviving return to Arsenal

Chloe Kelly has paid tribute to Arsenal for reviving her career after enduring a “dark place” on the bench at Manchester City, capping off a remarkable turnaround by helping the Gunners win the UEFA Women’s Champions League.
The England international rejoined Arsenal on loan from City in January after struggling for minutes under Gareth Taylor. Just four months later, she played a pivotal role in Arsenal’s 3-2 victory over Barcelona in Lisbon, securing the club’s second Champions League title—and their first in 18 years.
“As soon as I stepped foot in this club, I found happiness,” Kelly said following the final. “Renee Slegers, as soon as she got on the phone to me to give me the opportunity to represent this badge, I wanted to repay her. From being in such a dark place to now, it’s crazy.”

Chloe Kelly began her football journey in Arsenal’s academy before leaving in search of first-team opportunities. Now 27, she returned to her roots with a point to prove—and delivered. Head coach Slegers has been instrumental in helping the winger rediscover her form and confidence.
“They gave me an opportunity to step foot on the pitch and find happiness,” Kelly added. “It’s not about football at times. No matter what happened today, the club gave me happiness.”

Kelly’s future remains uncertain with her contract at Manchester City set to expire this summer. However, her form and emotional connection with Arsenal could pave the way for a permanent move.
“If it’s my last game for the club, I’ll forever be grateful,” she said. “I know I’ve given my all to Arsenal Football Club, and Arsenal Football Club has given their all to me.”

Reflecting on her journey, Chloe Kelly spoke emotionally about her roots in North London and the path that brought her full circle—from academy prospect to European champion.
“I literally was speaking to Lotte [Wubben-Moy] on the pitch after the game,” she recalled. “Me and Lotte used to get the Underground to Finsbury Park, then to Potters Bar, then walk to the training ground from the M25 bridge. Looking back, it’s been a journey.”
She added, “To do it with these girls is so good—players I’ve grown up with, like Leah Williamson. Arsenal have always paved the way for women’s football, and we continue to do so. This is for the ones that allowed us to be here today.”
With a Champions League medal now in hand and a sense of belonging restored, the next chapter of Chloe Kelly’s career could well begin where it all started—at Arsenal.
