Arsenal transfer target rejects Barcelona amid potential move to England

Espanyol goalkeeper Joan Garcia has turned down a move to city rivals Barcelona in favour of a switch to the Premier League, with Arsenal now firmly in pole position to land the highly-rated shot-stopper.
The 24-year-old Spaniard has become one of the most sought-after goalkeepers in European football following a standout season in La Liga, during which he made a league-high 146 saves and played a pivotal role in helping Espanyol narrowly avoid relegation.
Garcia was previously targeted by Arsenal last summer, but the Gunners were unwilling to meet his €25 million release clause, submitting a lower bid that Espanyol ultimately rejected. According to Espanyol sporting director Fran Garagarza, the timing of the offer was a major factor in its collapse.

“It was with La Liga just underway and three days away from the deadline,” Garagarza told Cadena SER. “The look on his face during that conversation almost made me feel sorry for him; I saw him as if he were my son. He was told the time would come, and it will.”

That time appears to be now. With the transfer window fast approaching, both Arsenal and Barcelona have reignited their interest. Reports in Spain earlier this week confirmed that Barcelona had outlined their project to Garcia and were willing to activate his release clause, with a plan to initially loan him out.

However, journalist Matteo Moretto reports that Garcia has now informed the Catalan giants of his decision to reject their offer. He has made it clear he prefers a move to the Premier League, which comes as a major boost for Arsenal.
Garcia is believed to have already agreed personal terms with the Gunners last year, and with Barcelona out of the picture, Arsenal may now be in a strong position to finalise a deal.
Spanish outlet AS has claimed that Garcia’s €25 million release clause remains valid, though it could have risen to €30m had he been selected in Spain’s UEFA Nations League squad. His omission from Luis de la Fuente’s latest selection means the lower fee still stands.
