Arsenal target sparks summer transfer speculation after hitting out at manager

Aston Villa striker Ollie Watkins has reignited speculation linking him with a summer move to Arsenal after publicly voicing his frustration at being sidelined during Aston Villa’s crucial Champions League quarter-final clashes with Paris Saint-Germain.
The 28-year-old England international, who has been in excellent form this season, was surprisingly omitted from Unai Emery’s starting XI for both legs of the tie. Instead, Marcus Rashford was chosen to lead the line — a decision that left Watkins less than impressed.
Following Villa’s emphatic 4–0 win over Newcastle United in the Premier League, Watkins made his feelings known in a candid interview.
“We’ve put in a lot of hard graft over the last few years to reach the Champions League. To only play 20 minutes across both legs against PSG? I’m not going to lie — I was fuming,” Watkins told Sky Sports. “I let the manager know how I felt. I respect his decisions, but I’m not the type of player who’s happy sitting on the bench.”

He added: “Missing out on the biggest stage was tough. I wanted to be out there, starting those games, because I’ve played a big part in getting us to this level. The team did well, but I wanted more minutes.”

Arsenal’s interest in Watkins is nothing new. The Gunners launched a £40 million bid for the striker during the January transfer window, only to have it quickly turned down by Villa, who viewed the offer as insufficient. That failed pursuit has since been seen as a key turning point in Arsenal’s season, with the club still lacking a clinical No. 9 — a void many believe cost them dearly in the title race.

Now, with the summer window fast approaching and Watkins hinting at discontent, Arsenal may be tempted to return with a fresh offer.
Watkins has recorded 19 goals and 10 assists in the Premier League this season, making him one of the most productive forwards in the division. His relentless work rate, pressing ability, and tactical flexibility make him an ideal fit for Mikel Arteta’s high-intensity system. At 28, he is also in his prime and could slot straight into Arsenal’s frontline.
Aston Villa remain firm in their stance against selling one of their star players, but Watkins’ contract — which runs until 2027 — could become a talking point if he pushes for a move. With two years left after this season, Villa may be forced to weigh their options if interest from Arsenal intensifies.
