Mikel Arteta looks set to win a major internal battle at Arsenal, with Thomas Partey now expected to snub lucrative offers from abroad in favour of signing a new contract with the club.

Partey’s current deal is due to expire at the end of June, but Arsenal have reportedly received positive indications that the midfielder intends to remain in north London. Talks over an extension began in April, and the 31-year-old is said to be eager to finalise the deal before the Gunners’ final Premier League fixture of the season against Southampton on May 25.

The Ghana international, who joined Arsenal from Atlético Madrid for £45 million in 2020, has made 165 appearances for the club. His importance to Mikel Arteta’s system was highlighted during this season’s Champions League semi-finals, where his absence in the first leg against Paris Saint-Germain proved costly.

Although Partey had been widely expected to leave this summer—with interest from Atlético, Barcelona, Juventus, and a big-money proposal from the Saudi Pro League—Arteta has remained adamant about keeping him at the Emirates. Arsenal now appear close to securing his future, strengthening their midfield options ahead of a busy transfer window.

Partey’s renewal would come as a major boost to the Gunners, who are also on the verge of signing long-term midfield target Martin Zubimendi from Real Sociedad in a deal worth £51 million. Arteta reportedly wants Partey to partner the Spanish star next season, with the club also planning for the likely departure of Jorginho, who has an offer on the table from Brazilian giants Flamengo.

Speaking in April about Partey’s contract situation, Arteta confirmed discussions were underway: “Yes, there is progress with all the players. I’ll leave that to [sporting director] Andrea [Berta] and the club to decide and to talk about.”

When asked specifically about Partey, Arteta added: “The intention is very clear. I’ll leave that to Andrea and the club to take a step forward.”

Partey has made 50 appearances across all competitions this season — his highest total since the 2017/18 campaign with Atlético Madrid — and Arsenal are encouraged by his improved durability as they prepare to mount another title challenge next season.
