Jorginho has officially announced his departure from Arsenal, with the veteran midfielder set to join Brazilian side Flamengo on a free transfer.
The 32-year-old Italy international was under contract with the Gunners until the end of June but has been granted an early release to link up with his new club ahead of the FIFA Club World Cup in the United States.
Jorginho joined Arsenal from Chelsea in January 2023, initially signed to provide cover for Mohamed Elneny following a long-term knee injury. Despite initial scepticism from some fans, he proved to be a valuable addition to Mikel Arteta’s squad, offering tactical intelligence, composure, and leadership both on and off the pitch.
His contributions earned him a one-year contract extension last summer, and over his 18-month spell in north London, Jorginho made 79 appearances, scoring twice and providing three assists. One of his most memorable moments came in dramatic fashion against Aston Villa, when his stoppage-time strike ricocheted off goalkeeper Emi Martínez for a crucial win that sparked wild celebrations among the away supporters.

Beyond his on-field performances, Jorginho’s leadership and experience were praised by Arsenal’s coaching staff. Even when not in the starting lineup, he played a vital role as a vocal organiser during warm-ups and on the sidelines.
Speaking after Arsenal’s 2-1 win over Southampton on the final day of the Premier League season, manager Mikel Arteta confirmed Jorginho’s departure as part of a broader summer shake-up at the Emirates.

“It was important to win it, and important as well to say goodbye to a few players who have left our football club,” Arteta said. “To say thank you for their contribution.”
He added: “Some of them, like Kieran [Tierney], have been on this journey for six years with us. Jorginho, Neto and Raheem [Sterling] as well – we have to thank them and wish them the best.”
Arteta acknowledged that the upcoming summer transfer window will be pivotal as Arsenal seek to add depth and quality in key positions in pursuit of major silverware next season.
“It’s time to reflect, time to reset, and get our energy back,” Arteta said. “It’s been a really demanding season that has stretched us all, but the culture and mindset at this club have helped us push through to the very end. To perform with the resources we had at the highest level until the last day – that’s remarkable.”
