Arsenal should avoid signing AC Milan winger Rafael Leao this summer

Arsenal are preparing for a busy summer transfer window with the possibility of multiple signings.
A marquee striker is the main priority for the Gunners, but a left-sided winger could be signed too.
With the inconsistency of Gabriel Martinelli and Leandro Trossard on the left flank, manager Mikel Arteta may want a new solution.
Earlier today, Foot Mercato reported that sporting director Andrea Berta has personally spoken with AC Milan’s Rafael Leao over a transfer.
Leao is not the priority target for the London giants. Athletic’s Nico Williams is the main choice, but Leao could be considered as an alternative.
In our view, the club should avoid an approach for the Portugal international this summer.
Leao has had another solid campaign with the Rossoneri, registering 12 goals and 13 assists from 50 appearances across all competitions.
He has managed more goal contributions than Martinelli (16) and Trossard (19), but we have concerns over his defensive output in games.
Leao is not known for tracking back effectively when out of possession. He tends to operate higher up, as shown in Sofascore’s heatmap for the season.
Defensive responsibility is one of the key aspects in manager Mikel Arteta’s playing style. Leao’s lack of defensive awareness seems quite evident.

In comparison, Martinelli and Trossard have impressed with their defensive work rate. They have shown the urge to double up with the left-back to thwart passes or crosses into the box.

Keeping this in mind, Arsenal should avoid an approach for the £63 million-rated star this summer.
