As the summer of 2025 approaches, Arsenal midfielder Jorginho faces a pivotal moment in his career, with his contract set to expire in June. The 33-year-old Italian, who joined the Gunners from Chelsea in January 2023 for £12 million, has been a vital squad player under Mikel Arteta.
However, recent developments suggest his time at the Emirates may be nearing an end, with a move to Brazilian club Flamengo gaining traction.
Jorginho has made 78 appearances for Arsenal, offering experience and composure in midfield, notably during last season’s title challenge. This season, however, he’s started just six Premier League games, overshadowed by Declan Rice, Thomas Partey, and Mikel Merino.

Despite his limited minutes, Arteta values his leadership, as seen in his full 90-minute performance in Arsenal’s 3-0 Champions League win over Dinamo Zagreb. Yet, with Arsenal reportedly close to signing Real Sociedad’s Martin Zubimendi, Jorginho’s role could diminish further.
Flamengo has emerged as the frontrunner for Jorginho’s signature, having secured a pre-contract agreement, per Goal (February 3, 2025). The Brazilian side, aiming to replace Erick Pulgar, sees Jorginho as a key addition for the FIFA Club World Cup.

Jorginho, who left Brazil at 15, expressed enthusiasm for playing in his homeland, telling TNT Sport, “I have never played professionally in Brazil, so it would be an incredible experience.” However, a loyalty clause in his Arsenal contract may require Flamengo to pay a bonus if he leaves before June 30, per Goal Brasil.
While Juventus and Fiorentina have shown interest, Jorginho’s heart seems set on Brazil. Arsenal’s rejection of Flamengo’s January approach underscores Arteta’s desire to keep him until the season’s end, but contract talks have stalled, per Metro (April 25, 2025).
As Arsenal plan a midfield overhaul, Jorginho’s departure seems inevitable, marking the end of a steady, if unspectacular, chapter for the Euro 2020 winner.
