Arsenal have opened surprise contract talks with midfielder Thomas Partey, despite widespread expectations that the Ghana international would leave the club at the end of the season.
The 31-year-old has enjoyed arguably his best campaign since joining the Gunners from Atletico Madrid in 2020, playing a pivotal role in Mikel Arteta’s side as they push for silverware both domestically and in Europe. Partey has made 45 appearances across all competitions this season, becoming a key figure in Arsenal’s run to the Champions League semi-finals — their first since 2009.
However, his importance was underscored by the frustration that followed his late booking during Arsenal’s 5-1 win over Real Madrid, which rules him out of the semi-final first leg against Paris Saint-Germain. Partey was cautioned in the 85th minute after a needless clash with Dani Ceballos, a moment that could have significant consequences for Arsenal’s European hopes.

Until recently, all signs had pointed to a summer departure, with Partey’s current deal set to expire at the end of the season. But according to The Athletic’s David Ornstein, Arsenal are now in discussions with Partey over a contract extension.

Ornstein reports that Partey is open to staying in North London, with the midfielder said to be happy at the club and settled with his family in the capital. The potential new deal could take the form of a straight two-year extension or a one-year contract with the option of a further 12 months.

“Arsenal want to keep Thomas Partey at the club beyond his existing contract and are in talks with the midfielder about a new deal,” Ornstein wrote. “Partey will also consider alternative options in case a deal cannot be struck for him to stay.”
Despite being hampered by injuries during parts of his Arsenal career, Partey’s impact when fit has been undeniable. His presence has brought balance and authority to Arteta’s midfield, and his continued availability this season has been a crucial factor in the team’s strong performances.
Though he will miss the Champions League semi-final first leg in Paris, Arsenal are hopeful he will be back for the return fixture in Paris on May 7.
