Arsenal assistant sporting director Jason Ayto is set to leave the club after almost ten years of service, bringing an end to a key chapter in the Emirates leadership structure.
The highly-regarded executive, who stepped into the interim sporting director role following Edu Gaspar’s departure in November, informed staff of his decision on Friday afternoon, according to BBC Sport. His exit comes ahead of what is expected to be a busy summer transfer window.
Ayto rose through the ranks at Arsenal over the past decade, becoming a trusted figure behind the scenes and playing a significant role in the club’s recent resurgence under manager Mikel Arteta. He was involved in several high-profile negotiations, including talks to bring Real Sociedad midfielder Martín Zubimendi to North London — a deal still expected to be completed this summer.

Despite being seen as a strong internal candidate to replace Edu permanently, Arsenal opted instead for the more experienced Andrea Berta, who was officially appointed in April. Berta has since taken charge of the club’s recruitment and contract operations, with Ayto’s influence gradually diminished under the new regime.

During the selection process, Arteta publicly praised Ayto’s contributions, describing his work as “phenomenal.” However, Ayto came under some criticism from sections of the fanbase earlier this year following Arsenal’s failure to strengthen their forward line during the January transfer window.

With no clear long-term pathway at Arsenal under Berta’s leadership, Ayto has now decided to step away and explore new opportunities elsewhere. His departure is viewed internally as a respectful and professional decision, reflective of both his ambition and the shifting dynamics behind the scenes at London Colney.
Sources suggest Ayto is not the only figure to have been sidelined as Berta establishes his own structure at the club.
