Arsenal sporting director Andrea Berta is set to hold imminent talks in a bold bid to hijack Manchester United’s ‘advanced’ move for Wolves forward Matheus Cunha, according to multiple reports.

Both Arsenal and United are preparing for significant summer transfer windows. The Gunners are targeting a few high-impact signings to help transform them from contenders into consistent winners, while United, under new manager Ruben Amorim, are expected to reshape their squad with the aim of securing a top-four finish next season.

High on United’s wishlist is Cunha, who has made clear his intention to leave Wolves at the end of the season. Thanks to a £62.5 million release clause in his contract, Wolves are not expected to have much leverage in negotiations.

Amorim is reportedly keen to deploy Cunha in one of the two No. 10 roles in his preferred 3-4-2-1 formation. According to the Manchester Evening News, talks over personal terms have already begun, and a deal is said to be so advanced that it would now be a surprise if the move didn’t go through.

However, reporter Ben Jacobs has revealed that Arsenal are making a serious push to challenge United’s position. The Gunners have long admired Cunha and are eager to bolster their attacking options this summer. Jacobs reported on X that Andrea Berta will personally meet with Cunha’s representatives in an attempt to sway the Brazilian toward north London.

Despite Arsenal’s efforts, United remain the frontrunners for Cunha’s signature and are determined to move quickly to close the deal before any rival intervention can derail their plans.

“Matheus Cunha wants to decide his next club before the season ends, even though his release clause won’t become active until then,” Jacobs wrote. “Manchester United are seen as frontrunners, with talks over personal terms set to continue in the next few days. Nothing has been finalised yet.

“Cunha has already agreed to the sporting project, and discussions over financials are ongoing. Newcastle are still in the race, and Arsenal have made fresh contact, with internal debate ongoing over whether to make a formal move. A new meeting is scheduled between Andrea Berta and Cunha’s camp, but United are intent on acting fast to avoid any surprises.”
