Arsenal are eyeing a surprise move to re-sign former goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez as uncertainty grows over the future of current No. 1 David Raya, according to reports.

Martinez, who joined Arsenal as a teenager in 2010, spent a decade at the club but struggled to secure a regular starting role, eventually departing for Aston Villa in 2020 in search of first-team football. Since then, the 32-year-old has flourished at Villa Park, making 211 appearances and establishing himself as one of the Premier League’s top shot-stoppers.

On the international stage, Martinez has enjoyed immense success with Argentina, playing a pivotal role in their 2022 World Cup triumph and lifting two Copa America titles.

However, the Argentine could now be on the move again, with growing speculation around his future after he appeared emotional and waved to fans following Villa’s recent 2-0 win over Tottenham. Reports suggest Martinez has received three offers to leave this summer, with Arsenal now considering an ’emergency’ approach ahead of the transfer window.

The Gunners’ interest comes amid mounting pressure from La Liga giants Real Madrid and Atletico Madrid, who are reportedly plotting bids for Raya. Arsenal, who only recently made Raya’s loan move from Brentford permanent, are said to be open to selling the Spaniard if the right offer comes in.

According to The Sun, Martinez would “jump at the chance” to return to the Emirates Stadium and take over as the club’s new No. 1 should Raya depart. Espanyol’s Joan Garcia is also being monitored as a potential long-term solution.

Martinez is under contract with Aston Villa until 2028, while Raya’s deal with Arsenal also runs until June 2028, meaning any transfer would require a significant financial commitment from all parties involved.
