Arsenal’s pursuit of Espanyol goalkeeper Joan Garcia has intensified as the summer 2025 transfer window looms, with the 24-year-old emerging as a prime target to challenge current Arsenal keeper David Raya.
The Gunners, who failed to secure Garcia last summer, are poised to capitalise on a potential reduction in his release clause if Espanyol face relegation from La Liga.
Garcia has been a standout in a struggling Espanyol side, leading La Liga with 89 saves across 24 appearances this season, per FBref. His 82.5% save percentage and ability to claim crosses (16.1% prevention rate) make him an ideal fit for Mikel Arteta’s system, which demands a reliable number two.

Arsenal’s interest, driven by goalkeeping coach Inaki Cana, dates back to a rejected €20m bid in August 2024, when Espanyol held firm at Garcia’s €30m (£25.2m) release clause.
Espanyol’s precarious position, just one point above the relegation zone, could slash Garcia’s clause to €15m (£12.6m) if they drop to the Segunda Division, per AS.

This financial lifeline for Espanyol, who need €15m in sales, aligns with Arsenal’s strategy to secure a cost-effective deal. However, a Spain national team call-up before June could raise the clause by €5m, adding urgency to negotiations.
Competition looms large. Newcastle have made a strong push, with reports suggesting they’re close to triggering the current €25m clause, while Manchester United, Real Madrid, and Barcelona also monitor Garcia.
Espanyol’s sporting director, Fran Garagarza, admitted openness to offers “close” to the clause, signaling flexibility if relegation looms.
With Neto’s loan ending and youngsters Tommy Setford and Jack Porter not yet ready, Arsenal see Garcia as a long-term investment.
Arteta’s new sporting director, Andrea Berta, may pivot to cheaper alternatives, but Garcia’s youth and potential make him a priority. Will Arsenal seize this chance to land a future star?
