Arsenal could sign Joan Garcia for a discount as Espanyol aim to sell before June 30

Arsenal are poised to sign a new back-up goalkeeper during the summer transfer window.

The Gunners presently have Neto as the second-choice shot-stopper, but he is expected to return to Bournemouth after his season-long loan.

Espanyol’s Joan Garcia has been a long-term target for the Gunners, and Mundo Deportivo (page 8) claim they are in ‘pole position’ to sign him.

Garcia has a release clause worth £21 million this summer. The figure will increase to £25m if he is not sold until the last 15 days of the transfer window.

However, Mundo Deportivo add that Espanyol could sell him before the financial year ends on June 30 to avoid losses. They are ready to accept a minimum of £12.6m.

Arsenal set to land Garcia in second attempt

The Gunners were determined to land the Spaniard from Espanyol before the transfer deadline last summer.

However, the La Liga outfit were reluctant to negotiate and refused to sell him for less than his release clause (£25m).

Arsenal’s £17m offer was turned down, and they went on to secure Neto’s services on loan from the Cherries.

The Gunners can now sign Garcia for a 40 percent discount, but we believe the final figure could be closer to the clause.

Garcia has made a huge impression for Espanyol this term and has played a significant role in keeping them in La Liga.

The 24-year-old has made a stunning 137 saves in 35 appearances for the Catalonian outfit.

He has averaged almost four saves per outing and has kept seven clean sheets for his club.

The Olympic Gold medalist has also impressed with his overall distribution, positioning and ability to make high claims.

Garcia would be a superb understudy for compatriot David Raya and could become the number one in the long term.

The Spaniard agreed personal terms last summer, and a deal could be straightforward as he also aims to join Arsenal.
