Arsenal could land Bundesliga winger for under £45m, but deal remains open

Arsenal are set to prioritise attacking reinforcements this summer, with manager Mikel Arteta keen to add depth and quality on the wings. While Bukayo Saka continues to deliver consistently on the right flank, Gabriel Martinelli has struggled to match his output on the left since the start of last season — prompting the Gunners to explore potential upgrades.
Athletic Bilbao’s Nico Williams has emerged as a top target, but Arsenal are also monitoring Borussia Dortmund winger Jamie Bynoe-Gittens, as well as AC Milan’s Rafael Leão. Despite reports suggesting advanced talks with Dortmund over Gittens, sources indicate those claims are premature. However, the club’s interest in the highly rated 20-year-old Englishman is genuine, and a deal remains a possibility.
According to The Athletic, Bynoe-Gittens’ future is unlikely to be resolved immediately after the transfer window opens in June. Dortmund are preparing for the likelihood of his departure, but his release clause — which runs with his contract through the 2027–28 season — is contingent on the club’s final league position and European qualification.

Should Dortmund finish in the Bundesliga top four and qualify for the Champions League, Gittens’ release clause will be set at €60 million (£50.9 million). However, if they qualify for the Europa League or the Europa Conference League, that figure will drop. Missing out on European football altogether would further reduce the clause, potentially pushing the price below €50 million — a situation Dortmund hope to avoid.

Gittens remains one of Dortmund’s most valuable assets, and while a summer rebuild is expected at the German club, they are reluctant to lose him without maximising his value. Arsenal’s pursuit may also depend on potential outgoings, with both Gabriel Martinelli and Leandro Trossard possibly making way if a new winger arrives.

Gittens impressed during a strong run of form in the autumn and early winter under former Dortmund coach Nuri Şahin, often standing out as their brightest attacking threat despite the team’s inconsistency. However, his influence has waned since Niko Kovač took charge. Under the new manager, Dortmund have adopted a more direct system reliant on wing-backs, leaving fewer opportunities for a traditional winger like Gittens to thrive in their 3-4-3 or 3-5-2 setup.
With Arsenal continuing to scout elite-level wingers and the transfer window approaching, the Gunners’ interest in Bynoe-Gittens could intensify — especially if his price drops due to Dortmund’s final league position.
