Arsenal have secured their first major signing of the summer, with transfer expert Fabrizio Romano confirming this morning that the Gunners have agreed a deal to sign Real Sociedad’s Martin Zubimendi.

Romano’s emphatic “here we go” post on X announced that the 26-year-old midfielder has verbally agreed a long-term contract, with Arsenal set to trigger his €60m (£51m) release clause. The move, expected to be finalised soon, marks a significant coup for Mikel Arteta’s squad ahead of the 2025/26 season.

Zubimendi, who made 43 appearances for Sociedad this season, is poised to replace Jorginho, who is set to join Flamengo.

The Spaniard’s ability to break up play and dictate tempo has made him a long-term target, with football.london noting Arsenal’s interest since 2023. Despite competition from Real Madrid and Barcelona, Arsenal’s confidence was evident, with Cadena Ser reporting that the club informed Real Madrid the deal was “practically finalised” during Champions League discussions.

The transfer, largely driven by former sporting director Edu and newly-appointed Andrea Berta, as per BBC Sport, is a testament to Arsenal’s strategic planning.

Zubimendi’s decision to join, despite Liverpool’s failed attempt last summer, reflects his belief in Arteta’s project, as highlighted by The Independent’s claim that the deal was “wrapped up” months ago.

For Arsenal fans, Zubimendi’s arrival is a statement of intent. His partnership with Declan Rice and Martin Odegaard could elevate the midfield, providing the balance needed for a Premier League title challenge and Champions League ambitions.

New sporting director Andrea Berta’s first major signing sets a strong tone for a transformative summer window.
