Alessia Russo beats Manchester City star to win WSL Golden Boot

Arsenal striker Alessia Russo has officially been crowned the Barclays Women’s Super League top goalscorer for the 2024/25 season, sharing the Golden Boot with Manchester City’s Khadija ‘Bunny’ Shaw after both netted 12 goals.

Russo’s impressive league campaign saw her score her first goal in November against former club Manchester United, before finding the net in five consecutive matches. Alongside her 12-goal tally, the England international also provided three assists, with her final strike of the season coming in April’s away win at Aston Villa.

Now firmly established as one of the WSL’s most reliable forwards, Russo has amassed 36 goals in 71 appearances for Arsenal. She also ranks second in the club’s all-time women’s goalscorers at Emirates Stadium with 11 goals — just one behind Beth Mead.

The 25-year-old’s stellar season was further recognised with the Football Writers’ Association (FWA) Women’s Footballer of the Year award for 2025, cementing her status as a key figure for both club and country. Shaw, despite playing only 14 league matches due to injury, finished second in the FWA voting. Arsenal teammate Mariona Caldentey placed third, while England and Chelsea defender Millie Bright came fourth.

Russo’s form has helped propel Arsenal to a second-place finish in the WSL, confirmed by a dramatic 4-3 win over Manchester United on the final day of the season. The result ensured the Gunners ended the campaign on 48 points, 12 behind unbeaten champions Chelsea, but with the reward of direct qualification to the UEFA Women’s Champions League group stage — a major step forward after last year’s early exit to Paris FC in qualifying.

Meanwhile, Mariona Caldentey capped her debut season in England by winning the first-ever WSL Player of the Season award, presented at the inaugural Women’s Professional Game Awards. The Spanish midfielder edged out Russo and Chelsea stars Aggie Beever-Jones and Sandy Baltimore in the fan-voted prize, recognising her all-around excellence throughout the campaign.

With both Caldentey and Russo recognised among the league’s best, Arsenal’s 2024/25 season closes on a high — with major individual honours, Champions League qualification, and a renewed sense of ambition ahead of next year.
