Arsenal have ‘practically finalised’ signing of Real Sociedad star Martin Zubimendi

Arsenal will likely make several changes to the squad during the summer transfer window.

A defensive midfielder could be one of the priorities, and Cadena SER claim that the club are on the cusp of landing their prime target.

Real Sociedad’s Martin Zubimendi has been heavily linked with Arsenal for some time.

A recent report claimed that he could join Real Madrid instead, but Cadena have dismissed the speculation.

As per the outlet, Arsenal informed Madrid that a deal is ‘practically finalised’ during a directors’ lunch before the Champions League quarter-final.

Arsenal set to land Zubimendi from Sociedad

The Gunners currently have Jorginho and Thomas Partey in the final months of their contracts.

The club have opened talks with Partey over a renewal beyond June 30, but the Ghana international has yet to commit to a contract extension.

Regardless, the hierarchy are expected to press forward with their move for Zubimendi, who has been linked with the club for the last few years.

Zubimendi had the chance to join rivals Liverpool last summer, but he made a surprise U-turn to continue with his boyhood club for another season.

However, it appears he is now prepared to move on with the lack of progress. Sociedad look set to miss out on Europe as they lie 10th in La Liga.

The Gunners can purchase Zubimendi by triggering the £51 million release clause in his contract, but Arsenal may seek to negotiate a long-term payment plan with Sociedad.

Zubimendi would be a fine addition to the squad. He has been superb with his positioning in midfield and has also excelled with his duel-winning ability, recoveries and tackling.

Judging by Cadena’s update, Arsenal have a free run at signing the 26-year-old this summer.
