Arteta insists Arsenal must be ‘very clinical’ against relentless Newcastle

Mikel Arteta remained upbeat ahead of Arsenal’s final home match of the season, insisting his side have “two big performances” left as they aim to secure second place and end a demanding campaign on a high.

Speaking before Sunday’s clash with Newcastle United, the Spaniard acknowledged the toll the season has taken on his injury-hit squad but praised their resilience.

“It’s been a phenomenal effort,” he said. “Given the injuries, red cards and suspensions, the team has had to dig really deep.”

Arteta confirmed several players, including Declan Rice, Gabriel Martinelli and Leandro Trossard, had only taken part in parts of training, with final assessments to be made closer to kickoff. Kai Havertz could also return after a spell on the sidelines, depending on clearance from the medical team.

“He looks in great shape,” Arteta said of the German. “His work rate and attitude have been unbelievable. He’s improved in areas that are crucial for a striker.”

With Arsenal already guaranteed a Champions League place, Arteta stressed the importance of finishing as high as possible.

“The dream of winning the Premier League is gone,” he admitted. “But we want to be the best of the rest. Feel that pain and use it to be better.”

Newcastle, who have proven tricky opponents in recent meetings, could leapfrog Arsenal with a win. Arteta praised Eddie Howe’s team as “remarkably consistent” and warned his side must be “very clinical” to get a result.

“They dominate almost every aspect of the game,” he said. “They are physical, smart and ready to compete.”

Arteta was also keen to acknowledge the home fans ahead of what could be a farewell match for several players.

“It’s our chance to say thank you,” he said. “They’ve been incredible this season—home and away.”

Looking back on the campaign, the manager stopped short of expressing regret over not being in the title race.

“We’ve all tried our very best,” he said. “Do we want a different outcome? Yes. But that doesn’t undermine the incredible things this team has done.”

He also highlighted the development of players like William Saliba and the progress of youngsters Jack Porter and Max Dowman, calling their upcoming summer with England “a huge opportunity”.

With two matches left, Arteta remains focused and proud—but clear-eyed about what still needs to be done.
