£30m star tells new manager of his excitement to leave Arsenal this summer

Brendan Rodgers has revealed that Arsenal defender Kieran Tierney is eager to return to Celtic, describing the Scotland international as “champing at the bit” to wear the green and white once again.
Tierney, who left Celtic for Arsenal in a £25 million move in 2019, is nearing the end of his sixth season in north London. The 27-year-old enjoyed a promising start to life at the Emirates, quickly becoming a fan favourite, but persistent injury problems have hampered his progress.
After an injury-disrupted loan spell at Real Sociedad last season, Tierney looked set to leave the Gunners in January, with Celtic among the clubs exploring a potential deal. However, Arsenal opted to block the move at the time.

Despite limited involvement in the current campaign — with 20 appearances across all competitions in 2024/25 — Tierney is expected to leave Arsenal when his contract expires at the end of next month. Celtic are reportedly confident of securing a deal for their former captain.
Speaking to The Daily Record, Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers confirmed the left-back’s desire to return to Glasgow.
Kieran Tierney (Image credit: Getty Images)“I haven’t spoken to him a lot of late,” Rodgers said. “We’ve exchanged messages and stuff, but I know his love of the club and excitement to come back here. So, yes, I’m sure he’s champing at the bit to get back.”
While Celtic continue to scout for new signings ahead of the summer transfer window, Rodgers underlined the importance of maintaining a strong homegrown presence in the squad.

“I think it’s very important,” he said. “Whatever league you’re in — Spain, Italy — having a national core is key. For me, it’s absolutely essential.”
Tierney joined Celtic at the age of seven and came through the youth ranks before becoming a mainstay in the senior team. Rodgers believes players like him are vital for preserving Celtic’s identity and culture.
“The boys that have come through here understand what this club’s about,” Rodgers added. “They’ve been brought up with the values of Celtic. They’re pivotal to the culture of this club. And not just the academy graduates — players like Greg and other Scottish lads play an important role, too. Having a Scottish core is key to your success.”
Celtic are expected to accelerate talks with Tierney in the coming weeks as they look to finalise a reunion with their former star.
