Will Mikel Merino Be Fit for Arsenal’s Champions League Clash with PSG?

Arsenal fans are anxiously awaiting news on the fitness of Mikel Merino as the Gunners prepare for their Champions League semi-final first leg against Paris Saint-Germain on April 29, 2025, at the Emirates Stadium.
The 28-year-old Spaniard, a key figure in Arsenal’s midfield this season, has been sidelined since the team’s 4-0 win over Ipswich Town on April 20, casting doubt on his availability for the crucial match.
Mikel Arteta addressed Merino’s status in his press conference on April 23, following Arsenal’s 2-2 draw with Crystal Palace. “We’ll have to wait and see,” Arteta said, noting that Mikel Merino, along with Ben White, was unable to feature against Palace due to issues that emerged after the Ipswich game.

Arteta’s reluctance to provide a definitive update has left fans concerned, especially with Thomas Partey suspended for the PSG clash and Jorginho doubtful for the season with a rib injury. Merino’s potential absence could force Arteta to reshuffle his midfield, possibly relying on younger players like Myles Lewis-Skelly to step up.
Merino’s role this season has been vital, particularly as a makeshift striker following injuries to Kai Havertz and Gabriel Jesus, where he scored six goals in 33 appearances.

His expected return to midfield against PSG was seen as a tactical necessity, given his ability to win duels and provide defensive stability. The lack of clarity from Arteta suggests a cautious approach, possibly to avoid risking Mikel Merino ahead of the second leg in Paris. While Arsenal have depth, Merino’s absence could disrupt their balance against a PSG side that has found form under Luis Enrique.
